In short

What is business tax planning?

Business tax planning means making tax decisions, entity choice, owner pay, retirement contributions and major purchases, before they happen, using your current books rather than last year’s return. CPA Torrance runs it alongside your monthly bookkeeping, with quarterly projections and year-end planning led by CPAs.

The real problem

Where most tax planning goes wrong

The biggest tax savings are decided months before a return is filed: when an entity is formed, when owner pay is set, when equipment is bought and when retirement plans are opened. Planning after December 31 can only report those outcomes.

Owners don’t overpay because they lack tax knowledge. They overpay because tax decisions are disconnected from financial data.

An S-corporation election is made without checking whether profit is high enough to justify payroll costs. Owner salary is set without modeling its effect on the QBI deduction. A retirement plan is chosen because it was easy to open, not because it allows the largest deductible contribution. Each decision looks reasonable on its own, together they can cost thousands of dollars a year.

Signs your tax planning is reactive:

  • Business decisions are made without understanding their tax impact.
  • Deductions and credits are missed throughout the year.
  • Cash flow suffers from poor tax timing and planning.
  • Your entity structure isn’t optimized for tax efficiency.
  • Tax planning only happens at year-end, when it’s too late.
  • Your financial data isn’t structured to support tax planning.
  • You only get advice at filing time, not throughout the year.

How our system works

Tax planning built into your monthly financial cycle

Tax planning works best when it’s tied to accurate books and forecasting. Here’s how the pieces connect.

  1. 01 · Monthly

    Integrated financial visibility

Your books are reconciled every month, so projections use current profit, payroll and cash figures, not estimates from the prior year.

→ No missing or unreliable financial data

  2. 02 · Quarterly

    Proactive tax optimization

Each quarter we update your projected liability and look for moves that still have time to work: adjusting owner salary, accelerating or deferring expenses, funding a Solo 401(k) or SEP IRA, or timing a large equipment purchase.

→ Reduced liability, not just year-end adjustments

  3. 03 · Before decisions

    Decision-level tax awareness

Before you hire, sign a lease, buy a vehicle or bring on a partner, we show you the after-tax effect, so the decision is made with the full picture.

    → Smarter, tax-efficient business decisions

  4. 04 · Always

    The Financial Triangle

Bookkeeping, tax planning and CFO advisory run as one system, so the numbers your CPA plans with are the same numbers your CFO forecasts with.

→ Complete financial clarity and control

FAQ

Tax planning questions, answered

Every business is different. If your question isn’t here, a 15-minute call will get you a straight answer.

When does an S-corporation election actually save money?

An S-corp can reduce self-employment tax because profit paid as distributions is not subject to the 15.3% payroll tax, but owners must pay themselves a reasonable salary first. Once you add payroll costs, extra filings and, in California, the 1.5% franchise tax on S-corp income, the election usually starts to make sense only when profit is comfortably above a reasonable salary. We model the break-even for your numbers before you elect.

How does the QBI deduction affect my planning?

The qualified business income (QBI) deduction can let owners of pass-through businesses deduct up to 20% of qualified business income. Above certain income thresholds it can be limited by W-2 wages paid, or phased out for specified service businesses such as accounting, law, consulting and health. Because S-corp salary reduces QBI, we plan owner pay and the deduction together.

Should I use a Solo 401(k) or a SEP IRA?

Both allow large deductible contributions. A SEP IRA is simple to open and takes employer contributions as a percentage of compensation. A Solo 401(k) adds an employee deferral on top, which often allows a larger total contribution at the same income, and can offer a Roth option. If you have eligible employees the rules change, so we review payroll before recommending a plan.

What if I already have an accountant?

We can work alongside your existing preparer as your planning team, or take over both planning and filing. Either way, we start by reviewing your last two returns and current books for missed deductions, entity issues and planning opportunities.

Do you work with businesses outside Torrance?
